Future Education Requirements for Condominium Managers

The Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario (“CMRAO”) recently announced changes to the education requirements for condo managers.  Effective November 1, 2021, the Minister of Government and Consumer Services will transfer responsibility for education to the Registrar of the CMRAO.  Property Managers holding a general license, and those on the path to obtaining one, are relying on the courses and exams previously developed by the Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario (“ACMO”).

Over the last several years, the CMRAO has been working with a committee of subject matter experts to develop a competency profile for Managers in Ontario, and the new education courses were designed to ensure that the 79 identified core competencies are included in the education material.  Based on this, a new curriculum of six courses was developed.  You can learn about the competency profile and course material on the CMRAO website.

The six new courses are:

  • Excellence in Condo Management
  • Working with Condo Law
  • Relationship Building
  • Physical Building Management
  • Managing Financials
  • Operational Quality

One significant change you should be aware of is that applicants for a limited license will need to complete the Excellence in Condo Management course prior to having their application approved.  This means that you will be able to expect that a Limited Licensee working with your community will have basic education to guide them in their new role.

It is important to note that those with an existing, valid general license will not be subject to the new courses but will have to complete new continuing education requirements after November 2021.  As well, if a Limited Licensee completes the current ACMO education requirements prior to November 2021 but have not yet completed their experience requirement to qualify for the general license, they will not be required to complete the new courses.
